Poppy seed pie

Old-fashioned recipe for poppy seed pie in my grandmother's china…

I did not know that poppy seeds were so healthy until I randomly read it in a magazine. It said they contain omega 3 fatty acids that boost one’s immunity and protect the body against disease. The small grain includes many minerals, manganese, magnesium, zinc and potassium, which boost positive vibes and reduce stress. I'm not sure how nutritional it is to consume it daily, but I adore it, and the Hungarians use it a lot. I remember the children, while in kindergarten, would have pasta served as a main dish, topped with ground poppy seeds and powdered sugar. I accepted things, no matter how strange they sometimes seemed.

This is an old-fashioned Poppy Pie recipe. It is made with lard so that the dough is tender. While preparing it, I remembered my grandmother. She was so elegant, always well-dressed, with her girlfriends would gather and have lunch once a week at her home. My grandfather had to come over at our place. We knew that grandma was having fun with her girlfriends. I too want to have such parties when I get older. I miss my friends a lot. We talk over the phone, we talk to the camera, but it is not the same. I took the cake tableware from my grandmother. The white embroidery and knitted lace tablecloth too. I moved 7 times so far, and the tableware must be intact. It follows me as an intrinsic part of my childhood memories… ❤

  • 200g sifted flour
  • 2 egg yolks
  •  100 gr. lard
  • 1.5 tablespoons sour cream

Knead the dough from the ingredients above and leave it in the fridge for 15 minutes. During this time, prepare the filling: whisk 4 egg yolks with sugar, and add vanilla sugar, 1/2 lemon squeeze and ground poppy seeds. Roll out the crust and spread a little more than half of the dough in a baking tray, pour the poppy filling and cover with the rest of the dough. Prick the dough with a fork. Bake at 190 C for 25-30 minutes. Cool completely. Sprinkle the pie with powdered sugar. Decorations depend on the present mood…
