Poppy Seed Roll

The old poppy strudel or as it is called poppy seed roll never goes out of fashion.

This recipe is I think the best for this dessert. This is how I like it with plentiful of poppy seeds filling. Next time I will try the walnut filling. It reminds me of the Hungarian Bejgli. We have them around the New Year holidays. They make them in a classic version with poppy and walnuts, whereas the modern version includes chestnuts, marzipan etc.

I do not drink a lot of coffee. One, two at most in a day. In the morning when I wake up, I make myself a cup of coffee, somehow it is a ritual for me. I sit in my armchair and serve myself the coffee in a nice cup and a sweat on the side. It kind of makes up for breakfast. For example, a piece of strudel with poppy seeds. This time I made it during the evening while everyone was asleep. I wanted to have it ready for the morning, so I wouldn’t do things in a hurry. I like my day to start with no rush.

Poppy Seed Roll

Ingredients:

Dough:
  • 250 ml warm milk
  • ½ yeast cube
  • 500 gr. flour
  • 50 gr. softened butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg yolk

 

Filling:
  • 500 gr. ground poppy seeds
  • 350 ml. warm milk

Preparation:

Add sugar and yeast to the warm milk and leave it to rise. Add to flour, egg, egg yolk and softened butter. Cover the dough with a cloth and leave it to rise for 30 minutes. Divide into 2 or 3 balls depending on the number of strudels you want to make.

The poppy seeds and sugar are mixed. Heat the milk to a boil. Gradually pour over the poppy seeds with the warm milk. Fill the crusts. Before baking, the rolls are coated with warm milk.
